Federation reponds to National Trust letter to us and other farming organisations

Last Friday we, along with other farming organisations received a letter from Mike Innerdale, Assistant Director (Operations) North Region, regarding the National Trust’s position on some key issues in the Lake District at the moment.

The Lake District National Park are looking for a Farming Adviser

The Lake District National Park are looking to recruit a Farming Officer to help develop their work and relationship with the farming community. This will inlcude facilitating the development of a new farming taskforce with practical actions to support the delivery of the management plan for the Lake District.

Pressure on RPA will continue until all Farming Recovery Fund payments are made

Pressure on the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) from the Cumbrian Farm Flood Action Group will be maintained until sufficient resource is put in place to quickly deal with all outstanding Farming Recovery Fund applications.

Survey results show flood damage cost Cumbria farmers thousands

Yesterday (10th February) The Cumbria Farm Flood Action Group issued a press release highling the results of the farmer survey. This was picked up by ITV News Border who  produce a short TV piece.You can view it by clinking on this link.

Managing sucklers to maximise returns from rough grazing.

The Farmer Network has been monitoring grass quality and cattle growth rates on 10 farms across Cumbria and The Yorkshire Dales where cattle were grazed on rough upland pastures over the past season. They will report headline findings so far and focus on how one of the graziers,Alan Tallentire, manages his suckler herd and the rougher grazing at High Griseburn.

Alan’s cattle are commercial Simmental crosses and he has also been breeding some pure Simmentals since the 1980s.

Flood recovery: Information meetings for farmers All welcome

The NFU is convening four open meetings around Cumbria to share information about flood recovery including the Farming Recovery Fund.

Updated flood newsletter and flood damage survey

The  NFU’s latest version of their flood newsletter is available to download - see below. It is full of important and useful information.

The NFU is working with the Farmer Network and other organisations (we are involved) to assess the scale of the impact of storm Desmond and subsequent flooding on farms, so we are better placed to help farmers and their businesses recover and get appropriate support from government agencies and other organisations.
