Federation's response to Gove's Health and Hamony Command paper

Today we responded to the Health and Harmony: the future for food, farming and the environment in a Green Brexit  consultation.

The key issues we wanted to get across are:

  • farming and the environment go hand in hand
  • for commoning to continue into the fuiture we need a resilient farming industry
  • common land already delivers many public goods and this needs to be recognised in all future support payments
  • cultural heritage must be included in the full range of public goods with funding provided to directly help sustain hill farmers who graze comon land as part of their overall farm business
  • for commons to effectively and efficiently continuing to deliver for the environment, we need schemes designed for commons, not shoe horned into schemes designed for sole occupancy land
  • farmers must be at the heart of decision-making and have a strong voice in agricultural policy making and scheme design
